چکیده

We consider Jackson queueing networks with finite buffer constraints (JQN) and analyze the efficiency of sampling from their stationary distribution. In the context of exact sampling, the monotonicity structure of JQNs ensures that such efficiency is of the order of the coupling time (or meeting time) of two extremal sample paths. In the context of approximate sampling, it is given by the mixing time. Under a condition on the drift of the stochastic process underlying a JQN, which we call hyperstability, in our main result we show that the coupling time is polynomial in both the number of queues and buffer sizes. Then, we use this result to show that the mixing time of JQNs behaves similarly up to a given precision threshold. Our proof relies on a recursive formula relating the coupling times of trajectories that start from network states having ’distance one’, and it can be used to analyze the coupling and mixing times of other Markovian networks, provided that they are monotone. An illustrative example is shown in the context of JQNs with blocking mechanisms.

Perfect sampling of Jackson queueing networks

We consider open Jackson networks with losses with mixed finite and infinite queues and analyze the efficiency of sampling from their exact stationary distribution. We show that perfect sampling is possible, although the underlying Markov chain may have an infinite state space. The main idea is to use a Jackson network with infinite buffers (that has a product form stationary distribution) to b...

Polynomial-time Perfect Sampler for Closed Jackson Networks with Single Servers

In this paper, we propose a sampler for the product-form solution of basic queueing networks, closed Jackson networks with single servers. Our approach is sampling via Markov chain, but it is NOT a simulation of behavior of customers in queueing networks. We propose a new ergodic Markov chain whose unique stationary distribution is the product form solution of a closed Jackson Network, thus we ...

Variance Reduction in Simulation of Multiclass Queueing Networks

We use simulation to estimate the steady-state performance of a stable multiclass queueing network. Standard estimators have been seen to perform poorly when the network is heavily loaded. We introduce two new simulation estimators. The first provides substantial variance reductions in moderately-loaded networks at very little additional computational cost. The second estimator provides substan...

On Perfect Simulation of Markovian Queueing Networks with Blocking

Perfect simulation of a class of Markovian queueing networks with finite buffers is examined in this monograph. The network processes defined are modelled by restricted multivariate birth and death processes with intensities depending on a random environment. The random environments are mainly a set of independent on/off processes. Several simulation experiments illustrate the use of the perfec...

Monotone control of queueing networks

This paper uses submodularity to obtain monotonicity results for a class of Markovian queueing network service rate control problems. Nonlinear costs of queueing and service are allowed. In contrast to Weber and Stidham [14], our monotonicity theorem considers arbitrary directions in the state space (not just control directions), arrival routing problems, and certain uncontrolled service rates....
